As an ardent New York Mets fan, I was distressed that the all time Met’s best shortstop, Bud Harrelson, who I grew up watching, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s At only 74, the signs of the onset were typical: cognitive issues – difficulty putting words together and general communication. The diagnosis, as with all families was devastating. Bud’s first reaction was “what do we do now”?
I would like to note that the physician didn’t say Bud had “dementia”. He used the word and called the disease what is was. Alzheimer’s. Many diseases cause dementia but Alzheimer’s is the most common, especially among senior citizens. Families can’t prepare for a journey when they don’t know what journey they are on.
Then the Harrelson’s did all the right things. They joined support groups. They spoke openly with the family. And they went public with the diagnosis. The support from fans not only helped the family cope but helped the fans who appreciated the candor.. When a celebrity shares a bit of his life story and struggles is a precious GIFT to the world.
Bud gave me a lot of fun as a kid and he continues to give of himself.. But he’s not giving away his World Series rings. That he’s holding on to!
